2023 A YEAR AT THE MOVIES

What a fucking year. The movies were so back. I watched Fifty two new releases this year. Dead on one new film a week. I went to the movies so much this year. We were so lucky. Movies from everywhere. Movies made money. We got so many movies I was so anticipated for. Can you imagine if Dune 2 was in this year’s mix!

Like I was saying, all the boxes were checked this year; international representation, big budget, independent , animated, sequels, debuts and comebacks from a few of film’s finest directors! No, I didn’t watch every TV Show that came out, but shout out to The Bear while we’re out here! That show was fucking amazing.

20. Asteroid City

19. Beau Is Afraid

18. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem

17. GOTG: Vol 3

16. The Zone Of Interest

15. Saltburn

14. The Boy and The Heron

13. Priscilla

12. The Iron Claw

11. The Holdovers

Okay fuck have I thought too long and hard about these:

10. Dream Scenario: This may have gotten the edge against Iron Claw and Holdovers all because of that David Byrne Suit. Dreams are weird as fuck and this nailed that feeling. I laughed quite a bit. It was very weird at times but you know what? Nic Cage is fucking awesome.

9. Blackberry: Didn’t expect to love this, but it was so awesome. Little like “The Social Network” which just so happens to be the best movie of the 2010s. I laughed, I was fired up and I enjoyed every second of this. Tell your parents to watch this one, its a great time and a great bit of history while we’ve been alive.

8. JW: Chapter Four: Listen I know this is so unlike me. At the time, this was the fIrst John Wick movie I had ever seen. Seriously the fastest three hours can get. Every second from start to finish absolutely rips so hard. So much action shit I had never seen before. Felt like there was about five or six sequences that just shred and leave you wondering, okay how the fuck did they do that?

7. Monster: Such a high level of filmmaking. There’s so many tricks in film making. This one is all about perspective. Started with being very confused but finished feeling all sorts of emotions. Beautiful movie. Films like this are a great reminder, the world is so much bigger than we think.

6. The Killer: I just love David FIncher okay? Fuck I seriously dont know how more people didnt love this? Its so simple and is a great time from start to finish. Excited to see how this one holds up. Fincher plays all sorts of games with the audience throughout.  The Smiths soundtrack rocked. The opening monologue paying homage to Hitchcock rocked. All of it rocked.

5. Poor Things: The funniest movie of the year. I love Yorgos, and although this is somehow his most normal movie? Watch and recommend this to everyone you know because its seriously is such a great time. Emma Stone is in a class of very little currently on level.

4. Killers Of The Flower Moon: Before even watching, there was never a chance this wouldn’t be in the top five. Martin. Leo. Bobby. That score. Chills. It’s grown on me so much since the first watch. Should be on every single best of the year list out there. I love Leo’s accent so much, it’s so funny. This wins best picture if it came out any of the past three years. Rest in peace to the great Robbie Robertson.

3. Anatomy Of A Fall: Even with it winning the Palme D’or, I had zero expectations going in. Of course, I walked out stunned. Courtroom mystery murder thrillers? DID SHE DO IT? So amazing. Go have a night and watch this brilliant movie, you’ll walk away so shook.

2. Across the Spider Verse: My generation’s Empire Strikes Back. I think about that ending everyday. So fucking cool. This has such a level of swagger mixed with confidence that seriously nothing else these days is capable of creating.

1. Oppenheimer: First off, not up for discussion, the best movie since 2019. We could argue even further. An epic movie. Does it all for me. The last hour is brilliant. The whole movie is perfect. I can’t believe we got this legendary of a movie this year. Seriously, this is going to hang with the best of them. With the “Lawrence of Arabia”s and “There Will Be Blood”s of the world. Robert Downey Jr congratulations on your oscar, we all love you so much. Christopher Nolan congrats on your oscar as well, we also love you so much. So great.

Once again, I’m so happy with everything that came out this year. I am so lucky to love movies so much.
