I turn 24 in a little over a week. Scary shit. I just wrote my CFA Level one exam last week. The other day Abbey and I watched my past “favourite” movie videos I made in 2022 and 2020 respectively. It was quite funny with how much it has changed over time so I thought I might as well do another one and bring it up to speed.
I have the diary to prove it, so I can comfortably say I’ve watched well over 800 movies since the last time I made a ‘favourites” video, rewatches and new ones. I’ve grown a lot, lived in a different city, matured, and had so much fun introducing and really connecting with Abbey on some of these. So with all of those factors it’s quite obvious the list is pretty different. At that same time there have been some classics that have really stuck around with me I don’t see going away anytime, maybe ever.
Writing this and making the video is spiritually gratifying. I want to showcase and share my love for film. Yeah its nice to be able to share to people I love what my favorite movies are, maybe encourage them to watch something new that I lam a big fan of but let’s be real this shits really just for me. I want to be thirty, fifty, sixty years old, looking back, showing my kids this shit and say fuck these were my favourite movies when I was 23 years old living in Montreal.
I feel really confident in this one. So much to say I feel like I can watch this maybe five years down the road and still feel like I really hit the nail on the head with how I felt, especially after sitting on all of these watches for at least a few months. No recency bias in this one. I’m going to try to not single any of them out but I am really proud with how diversified the list is across the board. In terms of country, decade, genre, style and language I’m proud to rep the set of a diversified portfolio. You cant put me into a box.
Lastly I just wanted to speak on the criteria I touch on at the beginning of the video. Some would say, yeah 50 is sort of a lot of movies to call favourite. But with where Im at now that’s really just 3.6% of everything Ive watched. Put in perspective it’s a very forgivable amount and a pretty exclusive list to make if you asked yours truly.
Initially, I planned to make the video to be my favourite 100, I really had the first 60 or so organized down, and then felt like I was just picking what I thought were the “best” to fill the rest out, not really my favourites. It sort of felt forced so I cut it down to 50 and had so much more fun with it. I just kept telling myself to chose movies I would say in a real life conversation, comfortably, to meeting someone for the first time or a loved one, yup… that is one of my fucking favourites right there and all of a sudden the list got really easy. Sure, there’s some better movies I’ve watched that didn’t make this list, but hey, this is a (not for much longer) 23 year old Hunter Racicots favourite movies list, so better luck next time!
If you ever watch ANY of these and enjoyed it, please please please hit me up and let me know. Would be really cool.
