It seems no one living here in Montreal is really from Montreal. Whether it’s because I’m new here or not, “Where are you from?” has been a real common question in my life as of late. Answering “I’m from Windsor” has only led to a blank confused face, or today someone asking why then I don’t have an English accent? I quickly respond with “It’s right across the border to Detroit” which obviously everyone knows, and then probably just associates me with because of how forgettable Windsor is.
That’s all whatever but for some reason being away from home and these conversations has pushed a feeling out of me that has been ready to come out for quite a while now.
Man, I just love Detroit. Like yes, associate me with Detroit. This blog is going to mainly be about the sports teams of Detroit but like I just love everything Detroit stands for. Everytime Ive been over its a fucking good time no matter what Im doing or who Im with. I love America, I love Michigan and I love Detroit. I mean I think it’s such a great city, and growing up in Windsor I feel lucky to have had Detroit always be there. From here on out I’m going to try to only rock Detroit hats. Tigers, Vintage Pistons or honestly anything repping Detroit that’s cool.
The Music History Of Detroit is just so cool to have grown up so close to all that. Obviously Aretha Franklin and Slim but how about Detroit pretty much being the birthplace of electronic music? Like how fucking sick is that? Not somewhere in Europe, not somewhere in New York, California, no, Detroit. The Birthplace of Techno. Not to mention the director, who went on the greatest four film run of all time (The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II and Apocalypse Now) in the 1970s, Francis Ford Coppola. Wait, what about the guy who had the biggest impact on the production of vehicle manufacturing of all time in Henry Ford? And it doesn’t hurt to mention again but has anyone ever been prouder to represent Detroit than Eminem? I love Eminem. I’ll always love Eminem.
Once again that’s all whatever and we can get to why I really wanted to write this shit. Officially commiting all of my fandom to the four professional Detroit sports teams. As a fan of sports, Detroit gives certain people from Windsor a team to root for. I’d say it’s close to a 40/40/20 split on who people decide to root for; Detroit based teams (Pistons, Lions, Red Wings, Tigers), Toronto Based teams (Raptors, Leafs, Jays), or random teams not relative to a geographical location like the Habs or Warriors.
At a point in my life now where I want to root for Detroit no matter what. I don’t really care about anything else. I mean like as a Canadian should I still be happy/proud if the Jays, Raptors or any Canadian NHL team won a championship after writing this? I don’t know. I guess well see but for now all I really give a fuck about is Detroit. Let’s get into each one individually; what they have meant to me, and what they are going to mean to me.
Pistons
It’s so hard to beat Vintage pistons gear. The History of the pistons is totally something to get behind. The Bad boys did their thing. That early 2000s squad was definitely cool. The Malice at the Palace. It will never get old but Darko Milicic right before Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade and CHris Bosh is probably the worst draft pick of all time. But hey, I mean the 2k Pistons all time roster team has to be top seven or eight to play with right?
I’m so invested in this young Pistons Core man I love them. When I think about it, Cade Cunningham probably is the motivation to write all of this about the city. I’m so excited for this season. Duren. Ausaur. Ivey. Oh my god let’s make the play in boys. Cade Cunningham needs to solidify himself as a top 10 NBA player, right now.
Lions
The Lions are the Detroit team I’ve been a fan the longest of. As a really young boy I liked the Giants until I heard the name Calvin Johnson. As a boy, I didn’t care that Detroit was right there next to me, I didn’t root for the lions because that’s what everybody else in Windsor did. My family are packer fans and the sole reason I didn’t go that route either was because of megatron. I literally would have rooted for any team that Calvin Johnson was on. He is my favorite player of all time. He is the best Wide Receiver of all time. He is why I am a Lions fan.
The history of the lions is hell but I absolutely love it. Barry Sanders seemed gnarly. It’s crazy to think the lions have undisputedly one of the best RBs and WRS of all time with absolutely nothing to show. I also love that Matt Stafford won a superbowl. Definitely my happiest moment as a lion fan to date. I’m so happy for him on the Rams now and will be pushing for him to be in the HOF someday because he really does deserve it.
Wings
This one may be controversial but let the evidence show that I texted Dean before the season ever started. From here on out I will only be rooting for the Detroit Red Wings (with an exception to Connor Mcdavid because he is the best hockey player of all time so I need him to continue to back my argument). The wings are fucking sick. Original six. The fucking logo. Gordie Howe. Steve Yzerman. Nick Lindstrom. Fuck the leafs. Fuck Tampa bay I dont care. You have it here in writing, never again. It was always fuck the habs but it still has to be said. LGRW. I want to be dialled at Little Caesars watching Moritz Seider be the best defence-man in the NHL. I am a wings fan till I die.
Tigers
Honestly, I can’t say I know much about the history of the Tigers aside from the early 2010 teams. It’s gotta be time sooner or later for them to turn it around, it feels like they’ve been so bad for too long. I want to go to a game at Comerica in October. I really do want the tigers to be nasty so I can be drunk at a playoff game just losing it.
Starting this one out is easy. I’ll probably get that Old English D Tattooed on me someday. The Detroit Tiger D is the symbol of Detroit. It’s effortlessly clean. It’s up there with the Yankee and Dodger symbols. I need more tiger hats. I only want to wear tiger hats. I should have only ever been wearing tiger hats. I’m sorry Detroit.
Note: Also a quick shoutout to the Little Ceasers personal pizzas inside of Little Ceasers Arena or Comerica because they hit so fucking hard. So greasy and so unnecessary but I can never resist.
