Here is the video: My Favourite Sixty movies from the 1960’s
Here is the list: https://boxd.it/micsQ
I wanted to do a ranking of some sort and thought this could be manageable before my movie watching time is cut due to summer starting. After ranking 60 of my favorite sixties movies, I’m confident it is my favorite decade of film. I’d also argue it’s the best? I think it can go toe to toe with any of them, their range of pictures, as well as the quality of movies is so pure. Everything is so extremely original and so many various barriers were broken in the film world during this time. I couldn’t even imagine what it would be like to be alive at a time when movies like these were releasing in theaters. So fucking awesome. It’s so strong through and through. If I’m watching something from this time, I know the bare minimum it’d be half decent.
Its a pretty great time for movies because:
- Movies are bigger then ever, in scale of production and ticket sales
- American film industry and the Oscars are massive
- Movies were the heart of pop culture
- International film is thriving
- The French New Wave has fully emerged, cementing itself as one of film history’s greatest eras
I obviously watched a lot of sixties films over the past couple weeks, to make sure I dont have the feeling of watching one after the video is made, and instantly having that empty stomach feeling. I swear nothing is worse than making a video or a ranking list, and it instantly be discredited the second you find something that belongs on it and there’s nothing you can do about it. I tried my best to avoid that during this process as I think I’m gonna take a break from Sixties movies for quite a while now.
Ranking these was extremely hard. I know some of these will grow and fade on me over time, and I’ll want to change the video but oh well I gotta live with it. The list is Sort of a mix of best and favorite? I like to give room for ones I think could grow on me, like some of the historic foreign stuff from legends. It might not have hit me the first time, but I know when I watch them again, Ill be happy I had them listed as high as I do. I Obviously respect the greats. You hear so much about them it’s hard to not have them high and respect them likewise.
Each one of the top 10 is a crucial movie for everyone walking this planet to watch. Heres a couple quick thoughts on some. Lets also keep in mind all of these are well over 50 years old.
Graduate: Maybe the most timeless movie ever?
2001: Maybe the best most encompassing movie ever?
Playtime: Maybe the most fun you’ll have watching a movie ever?
Dolce: Maybe the coolest movie ever?
Apartment: Maybe the best written movie ever?
Psycho: Maybe the most twisted movie ever?
Lawrence: Maybe the biggest movie ever?
Rosemary: Maybe the most haunting movie ever?
Once West: Maybe the best western ever?
Man not gonna lie this was so satisfying putting the list together. So many great movies. The top 40 movies are all absolute bangers I’d extremely recommend to anyone interested. I hope this video intrigues people to some of these films. That’s the goal, for people to watch, notice a movie I have listed high and then proceed to watch it because they are interested. I want to talk more about a lot of these movies, and that will come with time.
