I’m getting really excited to go over my favorite movies of the year and have been antsy to write something down. My “A year at the movies 2024” is going to be a massive piece. I have four more movies to watch before I can comfortably get that list/article out, and I won’t even be able to get my hands on them until February so I thought of this as a fun warm up.
I’m starting something new here. Who had the busiest year? An annual award I am now creating as of today. The worker of the year award. So, what are the credentials to be a nominee and winner of this new prestigious prize? Well, you sorta have had to be everywhere. You pretty much have to pop up as many times as possible with quality work during a calendar year. To be a nominee you definitely worked your ass off this year. You must be in multiple projects or be a major contributor to a couple of projects, the contribution to just one project is not the point of this award. I want the nominees to have been everywhere and kept popping up again and again. For example, there’s probably no one who worked harder or had a better year than Christopher Nolan with the works of Oppenheimer, but the sake of this award is to showcase the talents of the people that were able to spread themselves out (while being great) amongst multiple projects, instead of just one.
Trust me, I also understand that being a part of one large significant role/production vs multiple insignificant smaller roles/productions may be more difficult, but I want to shout out the people I saw multiple times this year. Looking ahead, Austin Butler is a great example of who could be a nominee in 2024, as a major role in three new films (Including Dune 2) coming out this year. I just don’t know how you’d have the time to do that, and that’s what I’m awarding here. Its pretty much an “How the fuck you do all that… in that amount of time?” award.
So, first off, let’s start with some of this year’s honourable mentions: Jeremey Allen White, Jacob Elordi, Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper
Now…. The Official nominees for this year’s Worker of the Year Awards…
Ayo Edibiri – The Bear, Bottoms, Spiderman: Across The Spider Verse, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Theatre Camp
Okay hello, Ayo. I didn’t even know who she was a year ago. Now she seems to be attached to literally everything. I saw a lot of Ayo this year and good for her, she’s cool. Win an Emmy? Way to fucking go. Way to earn it. Took everything she could on and delivered every single time.
Jason Shwartzman – Asteroid City, Spiderman: Across The Spider Verse, Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds, Quiz Lady
He just always pops up here and there but this year he seemed to pop up more than normal. I love Jason Schawrtzman. He is such a great character actor. I felt like I just kept saying “Oh Fuck Jason Shawrtzman”, which is usually just a yearly occurrence, but being a few times this year it was defiantly noticeable.
Joaquin Phoenix – Beau is Afraid, Napoleon
Dude how the fuck do you do these two massive roles in the same year? Seems mind blowing to me. I seriously don’t get it. Two larger than life roles and two very ambitious movies that the whole weight of the film is on your shoulders and you deliver two amazing performances? How? When’s the last time he’s relaxed? Joaquin needs to get checked up on. These movies definitely got looked over, deservingly so or not, Joaquin deserves his flowers for putting both of these out in the same year. Seriously Ridiculous.
Sandra Hueller – Anatomy Of a Fall, Zone of Interest
I mean being the lead role in the two best international movies of the year has to be pretty crazy right? Also never heard of Sandra before these two movies, but fuck is she so strong. She straight rips in Anatomy Of Fall. Im so excited for Zone Of Interest and half of it is because of Sandra. She seems to have a power that is so difficult to find nowadays. Hello and welcome Sandra.
After writing all this I cant and wont choose one singular winner, so for the inaugural Worker of the Year awards, if you’re a nominee, you are a winner. Congrats to all and see you next year.
